Charter 08, issued in December 2008, called for constitutional democracy and human rights in China; its principal drafter, Liu Xiaobo, was imprisoned for it and ultimately died in custody. On the evening of December 6, 2025, members of the China Democracy Party held up a banner in Times Square, New York, commemorating the 18th anniversary of Charter 08 and honoring Liu Xiaobo, calling for an end to autocratic tyranny and for freedom and human rights.
